The team analysed human hippocampal tissue from birth through adulthood using single-nucleus RNA sequencing, then applied machine learning to identify cells bearing the proliferation marker Ki67, validating the result through flow cytometry and spatial transcriptomic techniques that localised the cells to the dentate gyrus. Neural progenitor cells were found in adults, including individuals in their seventies.
