What happened

A historic breakthrough has been achieved at the Zojila Tunnel project, a landmark infrastructure initiative aimed at providing all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh across the Zojila Pass in the Union Territory of Ladakh. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted this milestone alongside a suite of transformational road and tunnel projects being executed across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The Zojila Pass, situated at an altitude of approximately 11,578 feet, remains snowbound for nearly six months each year, cutting off Ladakh from the rest of India and severely hampering civilian movement, military logistics, and economic activity. At 14.2 km, the Zojila Tunnel will be the longest road tunnel in Asia when completed, enabling year-round connectivity on the Srinagar–Kargil–Leh National Highway (NH-1). This breakthrough carries profound implications for India's strategic preparedness in a sensitive border region, economic integration of remote communities, and UPSC aspirants must understand it in the context of infrastructure-led development, federalism, and national security.

Smart Gravity Note

The Zojila Tunnel is a strategically critical project on NH-1 (Srinagar–Kargil–Leh Highway) connecting the Kashmir Valley to Ladakh through the Zojila Pass at ~11,578 ft.

At 14.2 km, it will be Asia's longest road tunnel upon completion.

The project is being executed by NHIDCL (National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

The tunnel will reduce the travel time across the pass from ~3.5 hours to ~15 minutes and ensure all-weather connectivity, which is currently disrupted for 4–6 months annually due to heavy snowfall.

It is distinct from the Z-Morh tunnel (Sonamarg tunnel), which connects Sonamarg to Gagangir.

Both tunnels together form part of India's broader strategic infrastructure push in the Himalayan frontier.

Zojila Tunnel (14.2 km, NH-1) will be Asia's longest road tunnel, ending Ladakh's seasonal isolation and boosting both strategic logistics and civilian connectivity.

◎ In Simple Words

Imagine a mountain pass so high and snowy that it gets completely blocked for half the year, cutting off an entire region from the rest of the country — that is what the Zojila Pass does to Ladakh every winter. India is now building a very long tunnel through this mountain so that people, soldiers, and supplies can travel safely all year round. A big milestone called a 'breakthrough' — when the tunnel diggers from both sides finally meet in the middle — has just been achieved. This is like finishing the hardest part of a giant puzzle that will keep Ladakh connected to India no matter how harsh the winter gets.
