The deep sea is generally defined as the ocean below about 200 metres, beyond the sunlit (photic) zone, characterised by high pressure, near-freezing cold, darkness and scarce food — conditions that make its life highly specialised and poorly documented.

DeepDATA, launched by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) at Kochi, is a mobile application to systematically record deep-sea fish species and their attributes, feeding the scientific baseline for the Deep Ocean Mission.

The Deep Ocean Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet in 2021 under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, has several pillars: development of technologies for deep-sea mining and a crewed submersible, the Samudrayaan project with its Matsya submersible designed to carry humans to depths of several thousand metres; ocean-climate change advisory services; exploration and conservation of deep-sea biodiversity; deep-ocean survey and a marine station for ocean biology; and offshore energy and desalination.

India is also an allottee of exploration rights in the Central Indian Ocean Basin for polymetallic nodules under the International Seabed Authority, which governs the mineral resources of the international seabed area.
