A data centre is a facility housing large numbers of servers, storage systems and networking equipment that provide the computing power — 'compute' — underpinning cloud services, the internet, and the training and inference of artificial-intelligence models.

Training large AI models is extraordinarily compute-intensive, relying on specialised processors (notably graphics processing units, or GPUs), which has made access to compute a strategic bottleneck: demand outstrips supply, prices are high, and much capacity is controlled by a few global firms.
