DI / DSData SufficiencyData sufficiencyMedium

Question

A question is given followed by two Statements I and II. Consider the Question and the Statements and mark the correct option. Question: In a football match, team P playing against Q was behind by 3 goals with 10 minutes remaining. Does team P win the match? Statement I: Team P scored 4 goals in the last 10 minutes. Statement II: Team Q scored a total of 4 goals in the match. Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above Question and the Statements?

Options

a

The Question can be answered by using one of the Statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement alone.

b

The Question can be answered by using either Statement alone.

c

The Question can be answered by using both the Statements together, but cannot be answered using either Statement alone.

d

The Question cannot be answered even using any of the Statements.

Answer

Explanation

Let P and Q's scores before the final 10 minutes be p and q. We know q - p = 3. Statement I gives P's final addition (+4 goals), but Q's addition is unknown. Insufficient. Statement II gives Q's final total (4). Since Q was ahead by 3, Q's previous score was either 3 or 4. Insufficient. Combining both: If Q was 3 and P was 0 (difference 3), Q scores 1 more to reach 4, and P scores 4 to reach 4. The match is a 4-4 tie (P does not win). If Q was 4 and P was 1, Q scores 0 more, and P scores 4 to reach 5. P wins 5-4. Since both a tie and a win are possible, the statements are insufficient even when combined.

In Data Sufficiency, test boundary cases. If you can generate one scenario where the answer is YES and one where the answer is NO, the data is insufficient.

Answer: (d).
