Genetic Engineering regulatory framework

The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) is constituted under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. It is responsible for appraisal of proposals for research, manufacturing, import, export and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and products. The Food Safety and Standards Act relates to food safety, the Geographical Indications Act relates to trademark protection, and the Wildlife Act relates to wildlife conservation. > GEAC operates under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and regulates all GMO-related activities.
