Classical Language Status Award

Odia was granted classical language status in 2014, becoming the sixth language in India to receive this recognition (after Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam). The classical language status is awarded based on criteria including antiquity, rich literature, originality, and cultural significance. Odia language meets these criteria with its ancient literary heritage dating back to the Cuttack Stone inscription and its significant contribution to Indian literature and culture.
