Maitreya is the bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism who is prophesied to be the future Buddha that will appear on Earth in the distant future to achieve enlightenment and teach the dharma. He is believed to currently reside in the Tushita heaven awaiting his turn to become a Buddha in the next cosmic cycle. Avalokiteshvara is the bodhisattva of compassion; Lokesvara is another name for the god Shiva or a bodhisattva of compassion; Padmapani is a form of Avalokiteshvara holding a lotus flower.
