Jahangir was the Mughal Emperor who shifted the emphasis from illustrated manuscripts to album and individual portrait painting. During Jahangir's reign (1605-1627), there was a notable change in artistic patronage from elaborate manuscript illustrations like those seen under Akbar to a focus on individual portraits and album paintings (muraqqa). Jahangir had a personal passion for portraiture and natural history, commissioning many individual portraits and studies of plants and animals.
